WebI think the primary reason people say the HD6XX needs a tube amp is that tube amps typically have a higher frequency response to low frequencies (i.e. more bass), and that the HD6XX lacks bass on its own. From listening to it, I think driven with any amp the HD6XX has a really good bass, it just needs enough power.
