Also, if you replaced the regulator with a LM2940CT-5.0 (5V low drop-out regulator) you could use a 6V lead acid gel battery instead, which would result in much less heat generated by the regulator since it's only dissipating up to 1.6W of energy (2.2V * 700mA) rather than 5.9W (8.4V * 700mA).
