WebVery briefly, stone lithography, developed in 1796, uses a flat limestone slab to transfer an image onto paper. It uses the principle that oil repels water. The stone is "sanded" with abrasive grit until it is smooth and flat. The image is drawn directly on the stone with special greasy litho pencils and then given a chemical etch.
